Sony Ericsson P900

All my life I have been using Siemens cellular phones (with the exception of my very first phone which was an Ericsson 198 (original brick). Started with the Siemens S3+, S4, S10 and at last the S35i. The S35i was the finest phone I had - it was fast, very robust, and stable. Unfortunately, after four years of use, it started to lack a number of features, notably GPRS and Bluetooth support. It was time for me to get a new phone.

I started off looking at various models and narrowed it down to the following list: The Siemens S60 (due to be released later this year), the Nokia 6600, The Motorola MPX200 and the Sony Ericsson P900.

I won't go into why I rejected the other phones, but rather give you an impression of my experience as an engineer with the P900.

Upon opening the package, you get everything you need with the phone. There is the phone itself, an additional 32MB SD flash disk, an extra stylus, a cradle with a USB connector for your phone, charger, hands-free "walk and talk" and the synchronization and management software for your PC. It runs under my Windows 2000 Pro installation, but here is no support for Linux systems.

The first thing I did was to insert my SIM card, put the battery in and switch the phone on. When it starts up, the phone goes through a personallization procedure - setting up language, PIN codes, etc. After that, it boots the Symbian 7 OS and displays the menu options.

Things that I hated about the phone:

  • No way to add a contact with the flap closed
  • Things I love about the phone:

  • It's a great gadget
