Sentech MyWireless sucks

Broadband lies

So you want to have a broadband, always-on internet connection. You've seen the ads on TV and in the paper for Telkom's ADSL and Sentech's MyWireless offerings. You decide to go with Sentech because it is portable and cheap and always on.

You might just have made a big mistake.

Sentech started to roll out it's MyWireless service from the beginning of January 2004. As users signed up, many reported amazing download speeds. Unfortunately, this was to be short-lived. From the 1st of May 2004, speeds started to decrease to the point of being no faster than a 33.6k dial-up modem. A colleague of mine has the 128k package, but he gets about 24k(bits) per second during the day. That's about half the speed you get from MWeb's 56k dial-up option. Please see the colleague's own post about it.

Stay informed on Sentech MyWireless by reading what other users have to say about the product in the MyWireless forum. Read how Sentech wants to sue a consumer that is looking out for other consumers by maintaining the FAQ for MyWireless modems and who has also written a Linux Driver for the Sentech modems for free.

This is a classic example of how not to treat your customers. I was very optimistic about Sentech's offering, but seeing Sentech's attitude towards their customers and their aggressive response to public complaining, I have decided to side with Telkom ADSL (for the moment).

Update: Also have a look at what consumers are saying about Sentech and their MyWireless service on the site www.hellopeter.com (a site that deals with service levels). Do a search for "sentech" or just click here. They are also on the list of companies that don't care.

Update: (11 Jul 2004) I see RoDent's site about MyWireless bad performance is back up. It is called www.poopband.co.za.

Update: (12 Jul 2004) A radio interview was held today by Chris Gibbons of Cape Talk radio (also of 702). The interview puts Sentech on the spot as the DJ wants to know what gives. Find the interview in WMA format here.

Update: (21 Aug 2004) Tested MyWireless local access speeds today and they jumped up to full speed (14kbytes/sec from ftp.is.co.za). Looks like that has been fixed. Packet-loss had dropped down to almost zero. International speeds are still very slow at ~2kbytes/sec.

Update: (27 Aug 2004) Telkom came and installed my ADSL link today. What a pleasure. I don't care that there's a 3GB cap - I can download more internationally with my cap than with MyWireless without a cap. I just downloaded the entire WinXP Service Pack 2 (266MB) in less than 1.5 hours (not that I use Windows XP at all).

Update: (18 Oct 2004) Sentech speeds have improved slightly. Local traffic (on a 128k package) seems to go along at ~12kbytes/sec. International access speeds are still between 2kbytes and 4kbytes/sec.
